hang with Alissa Walker for seven days on her Week of Walks to celebrate her new book. Each day she'll lead you on a different urban adventures based on City Walks Architecture: New York, recently published by Chronicle Books! All walks are free and require no advanced reservation, simply show up at the denoted time ready to walk (and look for Alissa, holding up a copy!). All tours include a complimentary serving of gelato or ice cream, plus all attendees will receive a coupon good for a discount on the book. Check below for the schedule.

Sustainable Skyscrapers: Times Square Goes Green

Join Alissa and a group of special guests, including Glenn Weiss, manager of public art and design for Times Square Alliance, as we learn about the reactive interiors and intelligent materials that make up the Bank of America Tower and six more of the city’s greenest buildings. We’ll find out how this unlikely corner of the city is going green, from low-energy LEDs to pocket parks in closed streets. Then we’ll head to SVA’s Interaction Design HQ for eco-friendly refreshments.

Pack a picnic for this one-hour lunchtime walk that starts at Bowling Green Park and marches up Lower Broadway, revealing the Gossip Girl-worthy back-stabbing backstory behind the battling buildings (and architects) who attempted to keep topping each other during the skyscraper race of the early 1900’s.

Includes the “Slaughter on Sixth,” MoMA, Lever Building, Seagram Building and a few lesser-known/secret spots, followed by Gordon Bunshaft-approved martinis and Mies van der Gelato.

A leisurely stroll up New York’s public space pride-and-joy, the converted railway corridor now known as The High Line, recently named to the GOOD 100 as one of the people, projects or places changing our world. We’ll also be gawking at the spanking-new architecture sprouting up around New York’s “Starchitect Row,” followed by gelato in the shape of Frank Gehry’s InterActiveCorp Building. Kids absolutely welcome!

“A piece of rope, another one longer and thinner, muffle, some stroke no splinter, a couple of pebbles, a sunflower and detached petals, some broken part of an old toy, a little sand, mother's stolen buttons, mother's pins, a few broken kitchen tools, piece of bruised paper, fishbone, grandma’s ripped unfinished knitting...”is how Anıl Duran describes his art that uses a spontaneous language driven by the story of place and time.
Anıl’s current work is inspired by a simple childhood game: pick up things that are scattered about; throw them up in the air towards the sun or some other light source; and watch them as they reach their highest, stop for a moment and drop down, imagining their silhouettes as various objects and stories. Dreamlike and mysterious, he defines his art as creation without knowledge of what is going to follow.

The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak
Populated with vibrant characters, The Bastard of Istanbul is the story of two families, one Turkish and one Armenian American, and their struggle to forge their unique identities, as their lives come together through a marriage which brings forth a family secret going back to the events of 1915. Filled with humor and understanding, this exuberant, dramatic novel is about memory and forgetting, about the tension between the need to examine the past and the desire to erase it.
Elif Shafak (link to: http://www.elifsafak.us/en/) is one of Turkey’s most acclaimed and outspoken novelists. She was born in 1971 and is the author of nine novels to date, most recently, “Siyah Süt” (Black Milk), “The Bastard of Istanbul” (Baba ve Pic) and “Ask” (Love). She teaches at the University of Arizona and divides her time between the US and Istanbul.

The American Turkish Society Book Club offers recommendations, resources and lively readers’ discussions in order to promote a greater understanding of Turkey’s history, current affairs, people, culture, and relations with the rest of the world. With the assistance of moderators, members get together monthly to discuss a book that they have read. Discussions in the past included critically acclaimed fiction set during the Ottoman times and in modern Turkey; contemporary works and those from as early as the 30s; written by Turkish and non-Turkish authors; touching on women’s issues, urban and rural life, religion, and much more.
