Mirror - Ayna

ASAF HALET CELEBI
(1907-1958)

Mirror

An image appeared to me in the mirror
someone other than myself
hailing from I don't know where
from China or beyond

I asked who're you
with a laughter came the answer
I'm the daughter
of the Emperor of China
I've been in love with you for a long time

I said come out

of the mirror
the thief of my image
I don't care ifI have no image
so long as
my hands can touch you
to believe that you exist.
The daughter of the Emperor of China
said
I can't come

but some day
like you I shall take your image too
into the depths ofthis mirror
and I shall disappear

ASAF HALET CELEBI
(1907-1958)

AYNA

aynadan bakan benim
küçük gotamacık
duvarlardan karşına çıkan
aynalardan hayalini çalan
muhabbet olup vücudunu saran
küçük câriyen
nigâr-ı çîn

nigâr-i çîn
bin bir aynada oynar
ayna ayna içindedir
nigâr-i çîn
nigâr-ı çînin içinde
ve zaman
zamanın dışında

uzat ellerini küçük gotamacık
hayal hayal içinde
dünya bir hayal dolabıdır
aynalardan geçer
küçük gotamacık
çok sürmeden hayallerimiz
aynaların arkasından geçer

aynaya bakan benim
hayal annemin oğlu
bodhista gotama

dünyada en güzel şey
seni buldum
artık hiç bir şey istemem
küçük câriyem nigâr-ı çîn
uzat ellerini

"The Blessing of the Hands,"

"The Blessing of the Hands," revised by Reverend Daniel L. Harris:

These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever.

These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future.

These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years and, with the slightest touch, will comfort you likeno other.

These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind.

These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow and, as in today, tears of joy.

These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children, the hands that will help you to hold your family as one.

These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it.

And lastly, these are the hands that, even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still be giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.

PS: The photo belongs to my best friend.

THE MEDlTERRANEAN IS IN HARMONY WlTH YOU - AKDENİZ YARAŞIYOR SANA

THE MEDlTERRANEAN IS IN HARMONY WlTH YOU

The Mediterranean is in harmony with you

The stars sweat and you are sweating too

The same wet sparkle is on your nostrils

The noise of the motor boats does not stop

The dogs bark in the distance

A moment ago a child cried

A sheet is being shaken out from Fatma's window

Ali Dumdum is swearing for hours on end

The fishermen beat the sea

These sounds are like the earth swelling the silence

It is the silence garrulous of your geraniums

We lay on the veranda last night

the offshore summer breeze above us

My hands still smell of thyme

It was as though I didn't sleep with you

but was wandering the mountains

I learned from you how to write of the sea

The blue pencil is always in my hand

Like a fishing boat goes out on a trip

my teacher wife goes to school

I open out behind her

tracing a north wind in my exercise book

There is an island that is just shearwaters

it turns and turns in my head

The days I've lived with you

became a silver circle

when your sun touched my life

I found at last that smugglers' cave

as you dazzled my eyes open

Death is perhaps like washing

in those dark waters stolen from you,

greener than seaweed when still,

but blue after blue soaring with every fathom

I thought my losses, my débris, my alcoholic works

all belonged to this flat world

How was I to know I was on the peak of my happiness

I understood when I went out with you

You know those ancient Greek horses

with their curly manes

the trees with their projections are like them

when the day turns to evening

The Balan Peaks march

companies of souls march

towards the wholeness of beauty

My woman

you are in harmony with the Mediterranean

Can Yucel

Translated by Richard McKane and Feyyaz Kayacan Fergar

AKDENİZ YARAŞIYOR SANA

Akdeniz yaraşıyor sana

Yıldızlar terler ya sen de terliyorsun

Aynı ıslak pırıltı burun kanatlarında

Hiç dinmiyor motorların gürültüsü

Köpekler havlıyor uzaktan

Demin bir çocuk ağladı

Fatmanım cumbadan çarşaf silkiyor yine

Ali Dumdum anasına sövüyor saatlerdir

Denizi tokmaklıyor balıkçılar

Bu sesler işte sessizliğini büyüten toprak

O senin sardunyalar gibi konuşkan sessizliğini

Hayatta yattık dün gece

Üstümüzde meltem

Kekik kokuyor ellerim hâlâ

Seninle yatmadım sanki

Dağları dolaştım

Ben senden öğrendim deniz yazmayı

Elimden düşmüyor mavi kalem

Bir tirandil çıkar gibi sefere

Okula gidiyor öğretmenim

Ben de ardından açılıyorum

Bir poyraz çizip deftere

Bir ada var sırf ebabil

Dönüyor dönüyor başımda

Senle yaşadığım günler

Gümüş bir çevre oldu ömrüm

Değişince güneşine

Neden sonra buldum o kaçakçı mağrasını

Gözlerim kamaşınca senden

Ölüm belki sularından kaçırdığım

O loş suda yıkanmaktır

Durdukça yosundan yeşil

Kulaç attıkça mavi

Ben düzde sanırdım yıkıntım

Örenim alkolik âsarım

Mutun doruğundaymışım meğer

Senle çıkınca anladım

Eski Yunan atları var hani

Yeleleri büklümlü

Gün inerken de öyle

Ağaçtan iz düşümleriyle

Yürüyor Balan Tepeleri

Yürüyor bölük bölük can

Toplu bir güzelliğe doğru

Kadınım

Yaraşıyorsun sen Akdenize

POEM X - BAHARLA ÖLÜM KONUŞMALARI

POEM X

Those cavalry lights riding by the chestnuts

woke the honeysuckle up so very early

and they will freeze forever!

And the olives with old Greek lace

Blowing wind!

Blowing wind!

Whoever saw such a rose-eating rooster

Its voice with the scent of dawn...

It’s as if a wine bottle filled up in prison

is rolling down the hill

Other roosters also rise

with their ladder-embroidered crests

And when the babies’ dreams

dangle down the balconies

like a relay race with red flags

The roosters re-discover the sea

Thieves!

Thieves!

And the sea

with the marine shadows of Turgut Reis

Is offended by all these lines

And its face turns first red

then purple

Blowing wind!

Blowing wind!

This morning

is a flight

from a vendetta a child

Way before dawn

Will be shot by the bullets of the sun

And when the evening arrives on the pine trees

and darkness falls

Upon the hills

Upon the hills

So beautiful is the blowing wind

Blowing wind!

Blowing wind!

This morning

and this spring

is a flight

A wick running for the gunpowder

Whiff

Whiff

So beautiful is the blowing wind!

Blowing wind!

Blowing wind!

So beautiful

So very beautiful

Even when it blows not

Even when it blows not

Beautiful

Translated by Sehnaz Tahir

BAHARLA ÖLÜM KONUŞMALARI

Atkestanelerini geçen süvari ışıklar

Er-erken kaldırmış hanımellerini

tühallah üşüyecekler!

Ve zeytinler eski rum tenteneleriyle

Esen yel!

Esen yel!

Kim gördü böyle gül yiyen horoz

Tanyeri kokuyor sesi...

Yuvarlandıkça sanki bayırdan aşağı

hapiste dolmuş bir şarap şişesi

Öbür horozlar da ayaklanıyor

merdiven nakışlı ibikleriyle

Ve balkonlardan sarkarken

düşleri bebelerin

bir albayrak yarışı gibi

Horozlar nev-icad ediyorlar denizi

Hırsızlar!

Hırsızlar!

Ve deniz

levent gölgeleriyle Turgut Reisin

Bütün bu dizelerden alınıyor

Bir ala

bir mora kesiyor yüzü

Esen yel!

Esen yel!

Bu sabah

bir firardır

kan-dâvasından bir çocuk

Kuşluk vaktine kalmadan önce

Güneşin kurşunlarıyla vurularak

Ve akşamladı mıydı çamlar

ve karardı mıydı

Tepelerde

Tepelerde

Öyle güzel ki esen yel

Esen yel!

Esen yel!

Bu sabah

ve bu bahar

bir firardır

Baruta koşan bir fitil

ifil

ifil

Öyle güzel ki esen yel!

Esen yel!

Esen yel?

Öyle güzel

Öyle güzel ki

Esmese de

Esmese de

Güzel

On Living
by Nazim Hikmet
Translated by Mutlu Konuk and Randy Blasing

I

Living is no laughing matter:
you must live with great seriousness
like a squirrel, for example--
I mean without looking for something beyond and above living,
I mean living must be your whole occupation.
Living is no laughing matter:
you must take it seriously,
so much so and to such a degree
that, for example, your hands tied behind your back,
your back to the wall,
or else in a laboratory
in your white coat and safety glasses,
you can die for people--
even for people whose faces you've never seen,
even though you know living
is the most real, the most beautiful thing.
I mean, you must take living so seriously
that even at seventy, for example, you'll plant olive trees--
and not for your children, either,
but because although you fear death you don't believe it,
because living, I mean, weighs heavier.

II

Let's say we're seriously ill, need surgery--
which is to say we might not get up
from the white table.
Even though it's impossible not to feel sad
about going a little too soon,
we'll still laugh at the jokes being told,
we'll look out the window to see if it's raining,
or still wait anxiously
for the latest newscast. . .
Let's say we're at the front--
for something worth fighting for, say.
There, in the first offensive, on that very day,
we might fall on our face, dead.
We'll know this with a curious anger,
but we'll still worry ourselves to death
about the outcome of the war, which could last years.
Let's say we're in prison
and close to fifty,
and we have eighteen more years, say,
before the iron doors will open.
We'll still live with the outside,
with its people and animals, struggle and wind--
I mean with the outside beyond the walls.
I mean, however and wherever we are,
we must live as if we will never die.

III

This earth will grow cold,
a star among stars
and one of the smallest,
a gilded mote on blue velvet--
I mean this, our great earth.
This earth will grow cold one day,
not like a block of ice
or a dead cloud even
but like an empty walnut it will roll along
in pitch-black space . . .
You must grieve for this right now
--you have to feel this sorrow now--
for the world must be loved this much
if you're going to say "I lived". . .

YAŞAMAYA DAİR
1
1947
2
Diyelim ki, ağır ameliyatlık hastayız,
yani, beyaz masadan,
bir daha kalkmamak ihtimali de var.
Duymamak mümkün değilse de biraz erken gitmenin kederini
biz yine de güleceğiz anlatılan Bektaşi fıkrasına,
hava yağmurlu mu, diye bakacağız pencereden,
yahut da sabırsızlıkla bekleyeceğiz
en son ajans haberlerini.
Diyelim ki, dövüşülmeye deşer bir şeyler için,
diyelim ki, cephedeyiz.
Daha orda ilk hücumda, daha o gün
yüzükoyun kapaklanıp ölmek de mümkün.
Tuhaf bir hınçla bileceğiz bunu,
fakat yine de çıldırasıya merak edeceğiz
belki yıllarca sürecek olan savaşın sonunu.
Diyelim ki hapisteyiz,
yaşımız da elliye yakın,
daha da on sekiz sene olsun açılmasına demir kapının.
Yine de dışarıyla birlikte yaşayacağız,
insanları, hayvanları, kavgası ve rüzgarıyla
yani, duvarın ardındaki dışarıyla.
Yani, nasıl ve nerede olursak olalım
hiç ölünmeyecekmiş gibi yaşanacak...
1948
3
Bu dünya soğuyacak,
yıldızların arasında bir yıldız,
hem de en ufacıklarından,
mavi kadifede bir yaldız zerresi yani,
yani bu koskocaman dünyamız.
Bu dünya soğuyacak günün birinde,
hatta bir buz yığını
yahut ölü bir bulut gibi de değil,
boş bir ceviz gibi yuvarlanacak
zifiri karanlıkta uçsuz bucaksız.
Şimdiden çekilecek acısı bunun,
duyulacak mahzunluğu şimdiden.
Böylesine sevilecek bu dünya
"Yaşadım" diyebilmen için...

Today is my birthday! Bugun benim dogumgunum!

""Bundan 20 yıl sonra yapmadığın şeyler seni yaptıklarına nazaran daha çok üzecek.
O yüzden çöz halatları.
Güvenli limanlardan uzaklara yelken aç.
Rüzgarları yakala.
Araştır.
Hayal et.
Keşfet..!!"

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore.
Dream.
Discover.”

Siirime Dair - About My Poetry

About My Poetry
I have no silver-saddled horse to ride,

no inheritance to live on,
neither riches no real-estate --
a pot of honey is all I own.
A pot of honey
red as fire!

My honey is my everything.
I guard
my riches and my real-estate--
my honey pot,
I mean --from pests of every species,
Brother, just wait...
As long as I've got honey in my pot,
bees will come to it
from
Timbuktu...

Şiirime Dair

Ne binecek sırma pelerinli bir atım

ne bilmem nerden geliratım
ne mülküm, ne malım var.
Sade bir çanak balım var.
Rengi ateşten al

bir çanak bal
Balım herşeyim benim...
Ben
mülkümü ve malımı
yani bir çanak balımı
koruyorum haşerattan.
Bekle kardeşim bekle..
Çanağımda balım olsun,
gelir arısı
Bağdattan..

Jersey City sunset - New Jersey

Hep Yol Almak İsterim, Hiç Duramam Yerimde,

Hep yol almak isterim, hiç duramam yerimde,
Tanığımdır dalga, o denizde titriyorsa,
Rüzgara seslenirim: gidelim! rüzgar dönse,
Dalgadadır sıra: Haydi daha uzağa!

İlerlerim, kasırga alır götürür beni...
İnsanlar, aşklarınıza dört elle sarılın,
Kapının önündeki taş sedire oturun,
Ve geçen günlerinizin arkasından bakın!

Ne mutlu evinden hiç çıkmayıp,
Her akşam aynı saatte çatının aynı
Köşesinden havalanan gece kuşunu
Tekrar tekrar izleyen kişiye ne mutlu!
