2009 Governor's Island New York Events

Governors Island will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 30th through October 11th. On Friday, the Island is open from 10 AM to 5 PM; on Saturdays and Sundays, the Island is open from 10 AM to 7 PM.

June 6, 7 & 13: White by Zvi Dance
Zvi Gotheiner collaborates with composer Scott Killian using the Fort's eerie sense of abandonment to reflect on our attempts to feel secure by arming our borders.

Saturday and Sunday, June 6th & 7th, all day: Michael Arenella and the Dreamland Orchestra Presents the Jazz Age Lawn Party
All weekend long, Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra will cast a magical spell of hot jazz and open-air merriment that will delight the whole family. This Jazz-Age Lawn party brings you back in time to the 1920s for a rollicking and delightful afternoon rendezvous of live music and dance, instruction in period dances, picnicking, and games. Admission is $5 each day (free for children under 5).

Friday June 12 – Sunday June 14th: FIGMENT*, all day
FIGMENT is an explosion of creative energy on Governors Island. It’s a free, annual celebration of participatory art and culture where everything is possible. For one weekend each summer, it transforms Governors Island into a large-scale collaborative artwork… and then it’s gone. For more information visit www.figmentnyc.org.

Saturday June 20th: Celebrate Army Heritage Day with the National Park Service, 11 AM to 4 PM
Join NPS staff for special programs and tours highlighting the military history on Governors Island.

Sunday, June 21st: Make Music New York presents Punk Island, 11 AM to 5 PM
MMNY presents a "one-day experiment that transforms the stately island into a punk rockers’ paradise" (NY Times). With Reagan Youth, Blanks 77, and dozens more.

Saturday, July 18th: City of Water Day, all day. Celebrate our City of Water! Food, family activities, tours, fishing, prizes. Take free ferry from Battery Maritime Building or come in your boat info at www.waterfrontalliance.org.

Saturday, August 9th: African Film Festival, noon
Have you ever wanted to experience the sights and sounds of Africa? Now you can! Join the African Film Festival on Governors Island and welcome world class music, drumming and song in an all-day festival.

Saturday, August 9th: Experience Civil War Weekend with the National Park Service, 11 AM
Living history demonstrations, special guided tours, music, and lectures bring the Civil War period to life for visitors of all ages. For more information call (212) 825-3045 or visit www.nps.gov/gois.

The Governors Island Ferry departs from the Battery Maritime Building located adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan. The ferry terminal is accessible as follows:

The "Good Morning America" 2009 Summer Concert Series has moved to Central Park! The live concerts will take place in Rumsey Playfield in New York City's Central Park. CLICK HERE FOR A PRINTABLE MAP.

Central Park opens to the public at 6 a.m. and audience members will be permitted to enter the park starting then. Concerts are free and open to the public. Entrance is on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive at 6 a.m.

"Good Morning America" airs live from 7 to 9 a.m., with concert performances usually starting around 8:30 a.m.

Until 30 May 2009 we will create big spontanous work at the Broadway gallery in NYCHey Friends,If you are in town, come and join us..We will be in the Project Room of Broadway Gallery NYC (www.broadwaygallerynyc.com) ..This room belongs to Gulay and Emre , the 3 D dream room-studio during 16-30 th of May ..So bring your RAW colours and different small media.An other special art work on silk which Gulay Alpay began in Istanbul, will be continued by artist and designer Emre Erturk in New York. Both artists will be selling the piece to help fundraise money for www.strength.org. Anti-hunger organization that mobilizes industries and individuals to contribute their talents to fight hunger. '' Yesss we can'' create the new art spaces for a new and better world!!!

How can I go to a TODAY concert?Fans and visitors are encouraged to join us on the plaza for the live performances. Viewing is on a first-come, first-served basis outside TODAY's window-on-the-world studio, located at 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Fans should arrive by 6 a.m. for best viewing.


Are tickets available for the concert?Viewing is on a first-come, first-served basis but you can sign up to get fan passes for the TODAY concerts. Click here to sign up.
