The Tiptons are an all-female sax quartet with percussion, based in New York and Seattle. The group features Jessica Lurie and Amy Denio, original members and lead composers of the internationally renowned Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet (BTMSQ), along with Sue Orfield, Tina Richerson and drummer Faith Stankevich. Following their 2004 release of TSUNAMI, they were featured on "The Next Big Thing" (National Public Radio), busking in the subway of New York.
Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle, all eaten and spit out by two violins, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass. The members of the Luminescent Orchestrii come from different scenes in New York City, yet come together through their love of Balkan and Gypsy music.
Under the leadership of the young Macedonian / Turkish clarinet virtuoso Ismail Lumanovski, the New York Gypsy All Stars Band has amazed audiences in NY, ready to take the world music underground by storm. The band was born out of the annual NY Gypsy Festival, playing jazz-inflected Turkish, Balkan and Mediterranean Romani (Gypsy) songs to frenzied crowds.
