Closed!!!

I regret to inform you that I will not be able to post anything until my graduation (May 28) because I have;
- 1 midterm
- 3 finals
- 1 field trip
- 3 group projects
- 2 presentations
- 6 writing assignments
and 1 upset stomach!

There is a chance that I might fail in one of my classes (first time in my life) and I want to do my best to avoid that. (or I will personally speak to Pope and ask for a miracle, since he will be right across from my office all day)

Hope you understand.

Until then take care and check out the archives on the right hand corner.

27th Annual Turkish Day Parade Brings Together Turkish Americans to Increase Understanding Between Cultures
Turkish Coalition of America Sponsors Cultural Festival in New York

On Saturday, May 24, starting at 12:00 pm, the Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA) will host the 27th Annual Turkish Day Parade. The annual event is a celebration of Turkish heritage and highlights the rich culture and contributions of Turkish Americans to America."This annual event celebrates the presence of the Turkish community in the United States since early in the 20th century," said Lincoln McCurdy, President of the Turkish Coalition of America. "The Parade and the month long cultural festival that celebrates Turkish music, dance, art and culture, remind us that Turkish Americans are a wonderful bridge connecting the two nations and help foster mutual understanding and appreciation." This year's march will begin on 56th Street and Madison Avenue. It will process down to 46th Street and 1st Avenue, which is located near the Turkish House. The first Turkish Day Parade was held on April 23, 1980. The event has grown from the original parade of 150 participants to what is now a substantial march involving thousands of Turkish Americans from all over the United States, both participating and watching the parade from the avenue sidewalks. Today, the Turkish Day Parade is an opportunity to honor Turkish American ancestry, bring together the Turkish American community, and educate Americans about Turkish culture. Each year around 100 floats are part of the parade, featuring organizations from soccer teams to Turkish American Associations and traditional Turkish dance groups. "The Federation of Turkish American Associations would like to extend their thanks to the Turkish Coalition of America for helping to sponsor this event that showcases the rich heritage of Turkish Americans," said Kaya Boztepe, President of the Federation of Turkish American Associations. "The parade is an annual opportunity to display the unique food, dance, and cultural pride of Turks in the United States."For more information on the many cultural events organized by FTAA during the Turkish Culture Festival and Turkish Day Parade, please visit http://www.ftaa.org/.

THE EDGE OF HEAVEN
A FILM BY FATIH AKIN

"RIVETING!" – David Ansen, Newsweek“The latest from HEAD-ON’S Fatih Akin is another cross-cultural stunner. This detour into Altmanesque territory suggests a dramatic leap forward, and the performance by Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla is, in a word, heavenly.” – David Fear, Time Out NY

LIKE FATIH AKIN’S PREVIOUS FEATURE, THE SMASHINGLY SUCCESSFUL HEAD-ON, THE EDGE OF HEAVEN spans the uneasy relationship between two cultures, Germany and Turkey. German born and educated, of Turkish descent, the filmmaker fashions a complex story with six protagonists whose lives become inextricably linked. Ayten, a Kurdish activist wanted by the German authorities, is harbored by Lotte, a German student whose political naivete is offset by her sexual agenda. Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla plays Lotte’s suspicious mother with understated hauteur. It’s a riveting story of intergenerational conflict between grown children and their parents, the clash of values between East and West and the edgy relationship between conventional and gay sexuality. Akin throws into the mix his special knowledge of how Europe’s borders are disappearing, bringing people together in random, dangerous, exciting and sometimes fatal ways.

Istanbul University Alumni Association of USA presents

MAY 15TH, 2008
7.00 Pm
Location : Turkish Center, 821 United Nations Plaza, New York City

Desperate Hours Film Screening and Discussion:
An Evening with the Director"Victoria Barrett"
Desperate Hours tells the stories of those precious few who, in the face of utter darkness, never lost their sight. In telling these little known stories from WWII, the film documents this moment in time, when groups of Muslims, Jews and Christians all worked together to save lives.
Some of the areas explored in the film are:

How Turkish diplomats in France and Rhodes put their own lives at risk rescuing Jews of Turkish origin.

How Turkey recruited the talented men and women Hitler discarded to revamp Turkish sciences, architecture, music, medicine, legal education, and art.

How the Yishuv -Jews from Pre-State Israel- daringly used Turkey as a base to rescue Jews in locales such as the famous Pera Palace Hotel - terminus of the Orient Express

Luminescent Orchestrii concert @ Drom

Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle, all eaten and spit out by two violins, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass. The members of the Luminescent Orchestrii come from different scenes in New York City, yet come together through their love of Balkan and Gypsy music. Sxip Shirey is an international circus composer, Sarah Alden is an old-time fiddle player, Rima Fand is an experimental theater composer, and Benjy Fox-Rosen is a free-jazz bassist. It is not uncommon to find Sxip playing tampon applicators with the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Rima composing music for a Lorca puppet show, Benjy schlepping his bass to a jazz gig, or Sarah fiddling away at some all-night old-time session.

"Ebullient…Passionate…Forceful" – Screen International"

A moving statement on war and the confining artificiality of borders" – Variety

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Huseyin Karabey’s feature debut Gitmek / My Marlon and Brando makes its North American Premiere in 2008 Tribeca Film Festival’s World Narrative Feature Competition. Three years ago, in real-life, Hama Ali, a charismatic B movie actor from Iraq, and Ayca, a fiery actress from Turkey, met on a film-set. Their love affair continued across borders through video love letters until the war in Iraq. As people fled from East to West seeking safety, Ayca decided to make the journey from West to East, seeking her lover. My Marlon and Brando, a feature film in which Ayca plays herself, is based on her extraordinary and, ultimately unexpected, experiences in such sad, mad times….

Please join us for an in-depth conversation moderated by Binnaz Saktanber on crossing borders in real life, in filmmaking and cultural understanding with actress-writer Ayca Damgaci, Turkish-American journalist and filmmaker Bilge Ebiri, producer Lucinda Englehart, filmmaker Huseyin Karabey, and film critic Sukhdev Sandhu.
